November 8, 2003 - St. Augustine, FL trip

November 8th the four of us drove down to St. Augustine, the longest occupied European city in the continental United States (San Juan, Puerto Rico has been occupied longer).  St. Augustine is about 50 miles south of Jacksonville.  The weather was good.

We parked in front of the "Fountain of Youth" and took the trolley tour.

After the tour we visited the old town:

Then we paid our money and visited the Fountain of Youth.  Here is the cross Ponce de Leon supposedly put in the ground to mark his claim:

We did try the "water", which had a lot of sulfur in it.

The grounds had birds, here is an Emu:

There were both white and multi-colored peafowl (peacocks and peahens) on the grounds and they had feed for sale.  We bought some:
