July 27, 2006 - Turnagain Arm and Portage Glacier

After a busy morning, we were on our own and we decided to play tourist on Turnagain Arm going south.  On our previous trip from Anchorage to Kenai, the weather was not as good and there were few spots to stop the motorhome.  With the CRV, we could stop at any viewpoint.  The tide was going out and Turnagain Arm is like the Bay of Fundy with a strong tidal bore, just not as strong as the Bay of Fundy.  That is the ripple in the water:

This German motorhome (it has German plates) has been all over the world.  It is built for ruggedness:

The country list:

The map (made large so it is visible):

We didn't get to talk to the owners, but I suspect we could talk to them for weeks or months about their adventures.

Another view further south with the tidal bore in the water:

A close-up of the tidal bore from the picture above:

Look at the view and how fast the water is running.  It was loud:

This is what it looks like east of Turnagain Arm.  People were looking for mountain goats and Dall Sheep with telescopes, but none were visible:

More snow visible on the mountains as you go south:

We stopped and had lunch in Girdwood and then moved on.

We are coming to the Whittier Road, this is where the motorhome broke down:

We took the road to Whittier but just far enough to visit Portage Glacier.  To go to Whittier you need to drive a $12 one way tunnel.

Here is another glacier off that road:

Portage Lake with the tour boat ready to pick up passengers:

Portage Glacier in the distance:

Back north we went, now the tide is very far out:

It was a lovely day to take pictures.
