March 17, 2006 - White Sands National Monument

It was a cloudy and breezy winter day at White Sands.  There was a Border Patrol station right by the entrance so we had to stop and get asked if we were U.S. citizens.  Then we went in.

A nest by the visitors center and Diane strolling out to a playa (dry lake or pond):

The sand blended with the sky:

We had a picnic lunch by the dunes they let people play on.  (In 2002 we drove into Alamogordo for lunch and ended up with KFC buffet, this time we packed a picnic).

Most plants were dormant and we saw only a couple birds in the distance:

The air force base close by trains pilots, including on the stealth fighter.  They were flying over all day:

We did see some hoof tracks in the sand, maybe we saw some of the African Oryx that lived in the area and they want to get rid of.
