September 21, 2007 - The Capitol Mall, Part 1

September 21st we took the Metro to the Capitol Mall.  The first place we went was the Archives:

Inside The Archives you could not use flash and it was dimly lit to preserve the documents.  It was wonderful to see the Articles of Freedom, which is the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights combined.  We also enjoyed the other sections of the Archives.

Here is a place none of us want to spend time:

We found a nice lunch at Oyemal, a gourmet Mexican place.  Then we headed for the Postal Museum:

Yes, the Postal Museum shares the building with a brew pub.

The Postal Museum was quite interesting.  They cover the time when there were three mail systems, the British, the Colonial, and the "will you take this to such and such when you visit the city" system.  Lots of information and displays:

Air mail:

Mail boxes:

Mail vehicles:

The stamp galleries did not allow photos and the very nice information on postal inspectors was more interactive so photos do not tell the story well.

An interesting building in town:

We walked by the Capitol Building:
