Sample Photos

Not the best photo comparison but it was easy to do.  These are from Hesperia, CA on December 29, 2008.  All are using a tripod.   Click on any photo to bring up the full sized original.

First comparison is using automatic and the widest angle

Canon G1 using automatic and the widest angle (34mm)

Canon A710 IS using automatic and the widest angle (35mm)

Nikon Coolpix 8700 using automatic and the widest angle (35mm)

Canon SX10 IS using automatic and the widest angle (28mm)

Notice the colors are not as good with the Canon G1 as the rest.  The wider angle of the SX10 IS brings in a bit more into view than the others.

Comparison of automatic and full telephoto:

Canon G1 using automatic and telephoto (102mm)

Canon A710 IS using automatic and telephoto (210mm)

Nikon Coolpix 8700 using automatic and telephoto (280mm)

Canon SX10 IS using automatic and telephoto (560mm)

It is pretty obvious that the telephoto range of these four cameras varies a lot with the Canon SX10 IS the winner.

Now a comparison using landscape mode and wide angle.

Canon G1 using landscape and the widest angle (34mm)

Canon A710 IS using landscape and the widest angle (35mm)

Nikon Coolpix 8700 using landscape and the widest angle (35mm)

Canon SX10 IS using landscape and the widest angle (28mm)

Not much change from using automatic mode.

Landscape mode and telephoto.

Canon G1 using landscape and telephoto (102mm)

Canon A710 IS using landscape and telephoto (210mm)

Nikon Coolpix 8700 using landscape and telephoto (280mm)

Canon SX10 IS using landscape and telephoto (560mm)

There are some differences in how the landscape mode worked as opposed to automatic.

Hopefully these photos help someone understand the differences in these cameras.
