January 3 to 10, 2004 - Fort Myers Beach, FL

We left Florida City on January 3rd and drove 151 miles to Sunburst Fort Myers Beach in Fort Myers Beach, FL.  It was a tight fit in our 35 foot motorhome, but we got situated.

A campground worker kindly cut the palm frond that kept getting in the way of the satellite dish.  They were very friendly here.

As we went to go shopping we saw this fold up plane on the highway:

I know Diane's father is jealous, he can't haul his Cessna around like that.

On the 5th we went out to Sanibel Island and Captiva.  Sanibel is known for the shells on the beach.

There were shells:

On the 6th we drove out to the Audubon Society's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary and took the boardwalk tour.  Here is a nice swamp wildflower:

A white ibis:

We love the reflection this Great Egret makes in the water:

More swamp wildflowers:

A Little Blue Heron:

Yes, there are alligators:

There are also cormorants and turtles:

And even some deer:

The map we had showing where the Corkscrew Swamp was not to scale, it was much further from Fort Myers Beach than we expected.  We had lunch in the town of Immokalee and found out how poor people could be in central Florida.  It was a bit depressing.

Mostly we just enjoyed the Fort Myers area.  We ended up really liking it even with the traffic.
