March 25, 2003 - Apache Trail Part 1

We drove out to Globe on US60 which retraced some of the route we drove the motorhome on March 19th.   It was much nicer and more scenic without the rain and snow but the cars were all going quite fast and the pull offs were not in good locations to get back into traffic.

Then we saw some people trying to flag someone down and stopped to check what was up.  They did not seem dangerous and were not.  They had a kid who had somehow managed to get the seatbelt around his neck and they needed a knife or scissors to cut the belt.  They used Bill's knife and were very grateful.  It was a mess to get back into traffic after that stop.  We didn't get any pictures of the scenery since Bill was driving and is the main photographer.

We had lunch at the casino buffet, not worth repeating.  Then we drove up AZ188 into Tonto National Forest.  We saw some of the largest saguaro cactus we had seen by this highway, but there were no good spots to take pictures of them.

We stopped at an overlook for Roosevelt Lake:

We stopped and looked at the Tonto National Monument Upper Cliff Dwelling viewpoint:

Then we stopped at the Tonto National Monument Visitor's Center, which was in a scenic area and the Lower Cliff Dwelling was visible from it.  Diane had a blister on her foot so we did not take the trail up to the cliff dwelling.

Here is the Lower Cliff Dwelling with people in it - this is a telephoto shot with the contrast turned up:

You can also see Roosevelt Lake from the Visitors Center:

This is a campground on the lake:

Then we headed on the Apache Trail (AZ88), which starts at this bridge.  The bridge is the longest single span bridge in the world, or was when it was built:
