June 21, 2006 - White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad Part 1

In 2000 we took this same train up from Skagway to Fraser and it was snowing and foggy.  This time we had good weather and can see how scenic and desolate the landscape was.  There was still snow in places.

Our car was close to the rear of the train:

Bill took these first pictures outside, but came in because it was too cold.  Turned out he had missed seeing a caribou that Diane saw from inside.

Here is the border between Canada and the U.S.

These next two pictures show the trail the gold seekers took, both ways and sometimes with horses:

It is no wonder they lost horses on this trail, there is no room to pass.

The scenery is amazing:

The old bridge that was the tallest railroad bridge in the world when built, replaced with a bridge and tunnel combination that could carry higher loads.
