August 5, 2010 - Route of the Hiawatha, Part 1

On August 5th we got up early to take the "Route of the Hiawatha" rails to trails route.  We took two vehicles 90 miles west on I-90 to Exit Zero, Lookout Pass.   This is the Idaho/Montana border.  It is where we rented bikes, helmets, lights and paid for our trail pass and shuttle ticket.  Since the place we pay is in Idaho, they charged sales tax.  The total cost was about $53 each.  Part of the rental is bike carriers since the trail starts at mile 5 in Montana and we have to drive there.   You can read more at http://www.skilookout.com/hiaw/

Getting the bike carriers on:

Loading up.

Next we drove back to exit 5 in Montana to the trail head.  After getting parked, we realized that it was a good time to eat lunch so we had lunch before starting the trail.

Dick and Carolyn ready to ride.

The start of the trail.

14.4 miles downhill starting with a two mile tunnel.  The shuttle bus brings us back to the other end of the tunnel, so it is 16 miles of bike riding.   Ten tunnels and 7 trestles are on the path.
